In addition to the digital analytics tools, we are combining that with an iterative feedback cycle with customers who constantly communicate with the product development teams. That way, customer feedback is with you at every step of the product development lifecycle, ensuring an effective solution at launch for your audience. Now, in terms of the key metric, it might sound crazy, but the only key metrics worth tracking are user acquisition growth & retention - AKA "are people using this?". Arguably, that isn't the only key metric, but it's one of the more important ones and tends to have a direct line with the financial success of technology solutions that go to market. Let's not forget other key metrics as well. One should actively track conversion rates (especially if you have a tiered subscription service), which tends to equal REAL revenue dollars. Churn is important too - you want users to be constantly using your solution, and keep coming back for more. If they tried your solution but didn't stay long, investigate that experience failure - it will teach important understandings about your product and what to improve. Other metrics than that, frankly, are vanity as they relate to product success. In my experience, I have consulted with hundreds of Software as a Service founders over the last 5+ years on creating digital products - the products that miss the mark are usually because they do not include customer feedback as part of their entire product development lifecycle. What happens at launch? Crickets. The fallacy - "If I build it, they will come" is a real folly of product pioneers: you need to go where your customers are and listen intelligently.
