The primary elements that should be addressed with patients include the importance of mobility and repositioning. The most critical aspect of this conversation is to be an empathic listener as well as a listener. I initially gather information regarding the physical constraints, fears/anxieties, and interests of the patient to ensure that any repositioning recommendations made do not compromise the comfort or safety of the patient. I also explain all mobility adjustments to the patient as to their purpose and how they may benefit him/her to establish trust as well as allow them to feel as though they are a participant in the decision making process for their care. Teamwork is essential when interviewing with interdisciplinary teams. We focus our attention on creating personalized and safe mobility plans that minimize risk. Effective communication with the nursing staff, therapists and physicians will provide assurance that all planned changes in mobility are implemented in an effective manner and through a collaborative approach to accomplish the desired goals for both the patient and the healthcare team.
