One of the most intense high-pressure projects I've worked on was a fashion photoshoot for a magazine spread. The concept was avant-garde, with intricate and bold makeup designs for each model. Things were already fast-paced, but when one model arrived significantly late, the pressure skyrocketed. I had to create this statement look in 20 minutes, including this detailed graphic eyeliner that typically took longer. Staying calm, I relied on my preparation. My tools and products were meticulously organized, allowing me to work quickly without compromising quality. To save time, I opted for gel eyeliner and pre-drawn stencils, which helped me achieve crisp lines under the studio lights. Just when I thought the hardest part was over, the photographer decided mid-shoot that one of the looks needed more intensity. Without hesitation, I enhanced the eye makeup by adding shimmering accents and layered textures, transforming it into a bolder, show-stopping look. The results exceeded expectations, and the creative team couldn't stop raving about it. The whole experience taught me that preparation, flexibility, and calmness are not to be compromised when working under pressure. It felt great to see the final images in that magazine and made me remember once more why I love this dynamic industry.
I remember one wedding very well, where the bride's hairstyle completely unraveled a few minutes before she walked down the aisle. Of course, there was no time to panic-just act fast. I did an improvised work with what was at my disposal, tools and products, and created another updo in less than 15 minutes. She loved it more than the original look, and later told me it made her feel calm and confident in that moment. I learned from this that staying composed under pressure is as important as technical skills. Always having a backup plan and being resourceful can save the day in high-pressure situations such as weddings or photoshoots.
One of my most memorable make up experiences while working on a wedding, didn't happen with the bride...it happened with her father! After I finished doing the brides make up, she asked me if I could please do her a favor. A few minutes later, in walks her father with the biggest, blackest eye I had ever seen in my entire life! I literally gasped! She was in tears and said, "do you think you could help my father"? Apparently, he had an incident the night before with a tree branch that almost took out his eye. I have honestly never seen an eye that bad, but I love a good challenge and pulled out my trusty camouflage pallets, corrective creams, and powders, and immediately got to work. The makeup gods were certainly looking out for me that day and thanks to some pretty miraculous products from: Kryolan, Limelife by Alcone and Mac cosmetics, I was able to completely cover his black eye with no problem at all, and dad was able to proudly walk his daughter down the aisle without looking like he went a few rounds with Rocky Balboa! Moral of the story...always be prepared for the unexpected on any job, as you never know what challenges you may face.
During a major fashion photoshoot, our makeup artist called in sick 30 minutes before call time, and I had to coordinate with three different local artists to split the work between them. I stayed super calm, adjusted the shooting schedule while the first artist traveled to us, and the whole team said the crisis actually brought out better creativity in everyone's work.
Coordinating a high-stakes photoshoot for a major fashion magazine showcased the need for exceptional teamwork and creativity in the beauty industry. The planning involved collaborating closely with makeup artists, hairstylists, and photographers to outline roles and set expectations. When a key makeup artist fell ill just days before the shoot, quick adaptation was essential to overcome the challenge and ensure a successful presentation of the upcoming season's beauty trends.
While I don't directly work in the beauty industry, I can draw parallels between high-pressure projects in business and the experience of a makeup artist on a wedding or photoshoot. One memorable moment that stands out in my career was working on a tight timeline for a key client presentation that involved multiple stakeholders. It was high-stakes, and like in beauty work, the attention to detail and the ability to stay calm under pressure were critical. Ensuring everyone was aligned, from planning the tech details to making last-minute adjustments, taught me the value of precision and patience. In a high-pressure project, the key to success is adaptability and staying focused on the end goal. Just like a makeup artist who can't afford to rush their work, it's essential to deliver under tight timelines while maintaining quality. I've learned to anticipate challenges, whether technological or logistical, and remain calm to guide my team through these situations. In high-pressure moments, efficiency, clear communication, and calmness are essential to ensuring that the end result not only meets expectations but exceeds them.
