One of my most memorable experiences with a volunteer who went above and beyond was during my time working with a junior AFL team. We had a volunteer named Sarah, a physiotherapy student, who took the initiative to help set up injury prevention programs for the young athletes. Not only did she assist with the typical volunteer duties like setting up equipment and managing logistics, but she took it a step further by creating individualized warm-up routines based on each player's physical needs. She spent extra time educating the athletes about stretching, proper movement patterns, and recovery techniques, even after the sessions had ended. Her contribution was invaluable because it drastically reduced the number of injuries we saw over the season, which allowed the team to stay more consistent and competitive. Beyond the physical benefits, Sarah's involvement also instilled a sense of professionalism and discipline in the players, which translated to improved performance on the field. Her work ultimately set the foundation for a long-term injury prevention program that the club still uses today.
