While artificial tears can provide temporary relief from dry eyes by masking the dryness itself, they do not address the underlying reasons why the dryness is occurring. Instead, I work with my patients to help them develop new habits which will allow their eye to naturally maintain its own tear balance again. Maintaining a consistent routine of taking care of your eyelids, using warm compresses and making some dietary changes can both help keep the oil component in healthy tears intact and prevent excessive tear loss due to evaporation. Many of my patients report feeling like their blinking has become easier and that their tears are staying moist longer after just a few short weeks of these practices. A long-term benefit of this practice is that it tends to be more sustainable as it improves the overall quality of the patient's tears and does not require the patient to continue relying on artificial tears to provide them with brief periods of comfort. In cases where there is chronic disruption to tear production (i.e., dry eye), my approach to treatment shifts away from simply addressing the symptoms at the surface level and toward re-establishing a baseline of normal functioning of the tear glands themselves. Using controlled amounts of either light or heat to stimulate the tear glands can help promote normal levels of tear production and ultimately support the development of adequate tear film. In time, these methods can help provide my patients with sustained levels of comfort regardless of whether they are viewing screens, reading books or performing other daily activities, eliminating the need for repeated applications of artificial tears to keep their eyes comfortable.
I'm not in healthcare, but I helped a friend who struggled with dry eye because she worked long on screen and she was miserable daily. The thing that helped her most was switching to scheduled micro breaks instead of chasing drops all day. So every 25 minutes she would stand, blink slow, look far distance, and reset tear cycle. After two weeks her comfort jumped way faster than any expensive drop she tried before, it was kinda shocking how simple it worked. This reminds me of how SourcingXpro in Shenzhen protects margin through small repeat habits like free inspections not big dramatic fixes. Anyway consistency saved her eyes, not products.
