1. Think big, start small. "As an aspiring entrepreneur I was often driven to think big, but this doesn't mean immediately to "act big". When you're an early stage startup - resources are scarce, so how do you compete? So the only way to truly shine is to find the niche as narrow as possible with a very clearly defined customer base. Then all you need to do is to make the best product/service for this customer, demonstrating that you can be better than other well established businesses. Only then can you think about scaling up. "Small Is the New Big", as Seth Godin well described in his book. " 2. Hire Based on Cultural Fit " When I was just starting my business I underestimated how important team culture is. About 8 years ago when we were around 50 people in total, our management team got together and formalized the list of core values (guiding principles) that mattered to us as a group. We agreed that we are ready to hire and fire based on these. Since then company leadership became a lot more clear about the people we wanted to join us. We used to hire purely on skill, we now hire a lot more based on fit. It's really simple: skills can be obtained and nobody really knows the job completely when they enter. But the cultural fit isn't really something you can just reshape. One of the questions we ask our interviewers/managers to think about is : "Do you see yourself going camping with this person? How comfortable would you be to have this person ain your life 8 hours per day?" After all, with 40 hour weeks... we may interact with some of our subordinates or peers more hours than with our significant others :) "
