Incorporating the latest nutrition research into my practice is essential, especially for clients with Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD). Previously, a low-fiber diet was commonly recommended for these clients, but recent research has shown that unless there are complications like strictures, low fiber is not ideal for gut health. Instead, we now focus on modifying the texture of high-fiber foods to make them more tolerable, such as cooking vegetables thoroughly or blending fruits into smoothies. This approach not only supports a healthier microbiome but also helps clients manage their symptoms more effectively. For example, one client experienced significant improvement in both symptom management and overall well-being after we adjusted their diet based on these new insights.
I subscribe to many email lists that provide a summary of recent publications, which helps me to stay up to date. Recently, I came across a study showing the positive effects of melatonin supplementation for reducing migraines. This is something that a client and I are testing out currently and so far they are reporting an improvement. Nutrition can often be a game of trial and error until you fine out what can work best for the individual.
