Occupational Therapists are definitely the equipment and assistive device experts and we will often be the professionals who make recommendations for bathroom modifications to ensure someone’s safety and independence. One device that a lot of people may not know about is the tub transfer bench. What makes this such a valuable tool for someone who wants to continue taking a bath/shower in their own tub when they have a physical or mobility limitation is that it offers them the opportunity to do so without having to worry about standing to step over the ledge of the tub to get in or out (which can increase the risk of falls. Instead, this bench that has 2 of its legs outside of the tub and a seat at the edge where the person would start to sit, followed by swinging their legs over the tub ledge and scooting themselves across the bench until they are situated in the middle. A tub transfer bench makes for a quick and more cost effective solution, rather than worrying about fully renovating the bathroom, which allows the person to have their bath with running water. We don’t realize how much we take for granted our ability to just step in and out of a tub when there are people who don’t have that same ability.
