I worked at Amazon for four years as a software engineer on the Amazon Fulfillment Technology team. The GDPR significantly impacted our work, requiring us to overhaul data handling practices. We adapted by implementing stricter data encryption and anonymization protocols, ensuring compliance while maintaining system efficiency. My advice: stay ahead of regulatory changes by continuously updating your knowledge and integrating compliance into your development process from the start.
IFRS 16 is an international financial reporting standard that has substantially changed the accounting treatment of operating leases. Previously, these leases were not reflected on the balance sheet, understating a company's true debt obligations. Under IFRS 16, lease liabilities and right-of-use assets are recognised, so the true state of a company's financial health is transparent. To adapt, I underwent comprehensive training to grasp the new standard's details. The company also introduced new modules in the accounting software to track lease liability and calculate right-of-use asset depreciation; financial reporting has also been enhanced to disclose lease liabilities in financial statements properly. This adaptation ensured compliance with the new regulation. The increased transparency also allowed for better financial analysis as well as better-informed decisions of stakeholders due to more intuitive lease accounting.
