“The Giving Tree” by Shel Silverstein provides a powerful lesson that’s easily understood by toddlers and can impact them for life. A story of love and self-sacrifice, “The Giving Tree” doesn’t hold back in its message, though in my experience, toddlers aren’t upset by the message–they understand it. I don’t know of any children’s book which has such a hard-hitting message that communicates it so simply and beautifully. I think there have been whole generations of nature-lovers who were first inspired by that book.
