When moving with cats, preparation is key to making the transition smoother. Carrier training before the move can help them see their carrier as a safe and familiar space, reducing stress during travel. Once in the new home, set up a small, quiet room with their belongings, including items that carry their scent, such as bedding or toys. Allow them to acclimate at their own pace, gradually introducing the rest of the home when they show signs of comfort and confidence in the initial space. For some cats, this adjustment period may take just a few hours, while for others, it could take several days. Patience and a calm environment make all the difference.
I recently moved from one home to another in the same state with 3 dogs. We visited the new location multiple times with our dogs before the big move, allowing them time to sniff and investigate. This allowed them to become familiar with the space. We also kept them away from the space when the move was happening so they weren't exposed to the chaos of the day. When they arrived permanently they already were familiar and had their dog beds and toys ready to greet them. While the move was still somewhat stressful for them, I think those visits helped them become more comfortable much quicker.
