I use trackable links in our digital PR so I can see exactly who comes to our site from a featured article. I also use Google Analytics to see if those readers actually turn into clients.
An example would be one of our campaigns where we easily met our KPIs. We received numerous placements with increased incoming referral traffic which seemed to indicate a successful campaign. However, in terms of actual performance we learned that we had misaligned audiences, low engagement levels, and low conversions for the leads that we generated. However, as we followed the numbers further, we only 2 percent of that traffic remained longer than 30 seconds and actual bookings of appointments hardly moved. The initial measures were impressive, but these measures were attention rather than action. The shift was the change in focus to the exposure volume to the qualified engagement. As soon as we started to focus the evaluation on patient follow through as opposed to headline reach, our PR plan became less vocal on the surface but much more in line with operational expansion.
We once rejoiced over a seeming PR victory at Accurate Homes and Commercial Services. One of our commercial renovation projects was featured in one of the local features and in the course of a week our website traffic increased by almost 40 percent. We banked on that lift at an early stage as an indicator that the campaign was working. The issue arose one month later. There had been no marked rise in inquiries in proportion to traffic and the few inquiries that came through were of a low margin commercial nature and not of the high margin residential nature we had been representing. The wrong metric was the volume of raw traffic. This was a positive encouragement, but it was not a measure of intent or conformity to our target client. Since then we have changed the process of our evaluation. We started to follow source of inquiry, size of project and close rate per PR placement. Another feature that we added was a dedicated landing page to featured projects with more explicit calls to action to commercial property managers. Our two campaigns recorded a reduction in the number of visitors but a 25 percent increase in qualified leads. The point was that being visible does not mean being valuable. Quality alignment and conversion is the actual story.

Results: The next quarter's marketing campaign yielded 28% increased sales with only half as many impressions, which is where we were able to get a true ROI from our efforts.
