A very basic breathing technique breathing cue is used to slow down the whole process prior to the student even touching the microphone. The student waits for a smooth exhale, speaks the call in one complete sentence, then releases the push to talk as soon as possible. This exhalation helps control speed, steadies the voice, and eliminates the anxiety that produces rapid or disorganized radio communications. When working the patterns of an active Class D airport, I instruct a nervous student to read the line from the kneeboard once, then say it out loud quietly, using the exact same exhalation, prior to transmission. It only takes a few seconds and typically results in the first exchange with the tower being clean, and this provides the student with enough confidence to be able to finish the remainder of the circuit without issues.
