We engage several video editors each year as independent contractors to provide services for us. Last year, when the time came to send out 1099-NECs, one independent contractor asked me to list the address for him in Nevada (a state with no income tax). However, knowing this independent contractor well, I knew he lived and worked in California, a state with heavy income taxes. In short, I knew he was playing games to dodge paying state tax to California. Not wanting to be a part of his tax evasion scheme and desiring to list the California address I had for him, I asked if he could provide me some proof of residency for the Nevada address. He in turn gave me an electric bill from NV Energy. Something about it just seemed off, so I asked a friend who lives in Reno to send me a copy of his bill so I could compare them. Sure enough, my friend's bill looked different and this IC had pulled a copy of an old bill from Google to doctor it. Luckily it didn’t cause us any business harm.
