I begin by making eye contact and seeing each individual as the only one of "them" on the planet. I give some general information in the beginning session to provide some structure and space for them to ask questions or make comments. I read their body language and try to mirror a bit to increase the probability of connection. I ask open-ended questions and follow their energy as to which subsequent questions may need to be asked. If they seem to have some trust issues, I may offer a bit of personal experience so they don't feel so alone. Their story is very interesting to me and I give them 100% of my attention and respect as they are being courageous in the telling of it. However their story unfolds, I meet them where they are, ask them where they are wanting to go, and then partner with them to get there.

One powerful strategy I use to create a welcoming and inclusive environment for all clients regardless of their background or identity is to go through personal attunement - attuning to each client's unique and personal background and experience, recognizing and acknowledging that shouldn't assume that I know who they are based on previous experiences with others. I invite my clients to co-create their experience with me, and openness to fully share their identity, their value systems, their do's and don't including boundaries and ways of working that help them feel safe, seen, heard and respected.
Developing a welcoming and inclusive space starts with careful listening. Clients need to feel secure in disclosing their experiences and identity without fear of judgment. Clear and respectful intake processes allow clients to express their backgrounds openly. Acknowledging each person's story from the start builds trust and shows respect for their individuality. Promoting diversity means removing obstacles that limit access or comfort. Offering flexible scheduling and multiple communication channels accommodates different needs and lifestyles. Training teams to recognize and challenge unconscious biases improves the client experience. These steps ensure every client receives care tailored to their identity, culture, and circumstances. Honest conversations about identity and values during sessions create space for clients to engage fully. This approach provides guidance that respects their context. Studies show that businesses prioritizing inclusivity report higher satisfaction and better outcomes. Inclusivity requires ongoing education and adaptation. It demands a continuous commitment to meeting clients where they are, increasing trust, engagement, and progress.
One strategy I use to create a welcoming and inclusive environment is actively listening and tailoring my coaching approach to each client's unique background and identity. Early on, I realized that assuming a one-size-fits-all method doesn't work, so I take time to understand their values, culture, and experiences before setting goals. I promote diversity by continuously educating myself on different perspectives and integrating inclusive language and practices into sessions. For example, I've incorporated flexible scheduling to accommodate clients in various time zones and life situations. I also create a safe space where clients feel comfortable sharing their authentic selves without judgment. This approach has helped build trust and deeper connections, allowing clients from all walks of life to feel seen, heard, and empowered throughout their coaching journey.
