One cost-saving measure that helped improve efficiency in our logistics operations was dynamic route optimisation software. Traditionally, routes were planned based on static factors such as distance. This often resulted in waste, such as empty trucks on the way back. The new software utilises real-time data on traffic, weather conditions, delivery schedules, and fuel costs to plot out the best routes. We can now cluster deliveries geographically, reduce empty miles, and ensure all deliveries are made on time. The software also considers truck capacity so we can load up and run fewer vehicles. It can also consider the limitation of drivers' daily work hours to ensure compliance with the law and, at the same time, driver safety. This data-based approach has saved us tons in transportation costs while maintaining delivery time and customer satisfaction and, to some extent, reduced our carbon footprint.
