One surprising thing many people don't realize about cancer recovery is how long the emotional and identity recovery takes even after the physical treatment is done. Most assume the hard part ends after the last infusion or last radiation session. But so many patients say the hardest part actually starts after the hospital part ends because now they have to rebuild what "normal" even means again. When I share this with new patients, it usually takes pressure off of them. They stop thinking they're failing because they're not bouncing back fast. It reframes recovery as a long reset, not a quick return.
