Combining multiple topicals can be very effective when approached thoughtfully. I am the in-house perfumer at Pairfum London and I am a big fan of layering perfumer. Layering is the term used in perfumery to describe applying multiple topicals, i.e. perfumes, one over the top of the other. For a longer lasting fragrance, I promote applying an unscented lotion or body oil before applying the perfume you wear on the day. The oil in the lotion binds with the oils in the perfume, thereby slowing down the release of your fragrance. Another very popular form of layering fragrance is to combine fresh & light fragrances that need to be applied several times per day with a warm, deep and rich fragrance that lasts all day. This way when topping up your fresh & light fragrance during the day, you can change the olfactive profile by using different lighter fragrances over the lasting fragrance. When combining fragrance with lotions, oil or other cosmetics, you must be aware of possible interactions between the fragrance and each topical. Test them together on a small area to confirm their harmony. That way you ensure a luxurious result without overwhelming the skin. Summing up, I am a big fan of 'layering' and applying multiple topicals.
Applying multiple topical products can be highly beneficial for your skin, but it requires some know-how to avoid irritation and ensure each product works effectively. For instance, layering serums, moisturizers, and sunscreens can amplify their benefits, providing hydration, treatment, and protection. It's important to apply products that have lighter consistencies before those that are heavier; for example, a water-based serum should go under a cream-based moisturizer. This technique helps the skin better absorb each product without any one product blocking the penetration of another. From personal experience, starting with a clean base is crucial. Always cleanse your skin thoroughly before applying any products. And when in doubt, always do a patch test with new products to see how they react with your existing regimen, especially if you have sensitive skin. I learned this lesson the hard way after applying two strong actives that left my skin irritated for weeks. So, remember to introduce new products one at a time and give your skin a chance to adjust. As a closing thought, staying consistent with the routine and being patient as your skin adapts, will provide the most noticeable results over time.
