As a young software engineer, the best piece of advice I received was from my engineering manager. They persuaded me to align my personal career goals and milestones with the goals/needs of my team, my business unit and the organization. When I first received this piece of wisdom from my manager, I was shocked by its simplicity - and surprised that this was not as obvious to me - being someone who was just starting out on their career path. It is very easy to get bogged down in your day to day, and focus on achieving tasks assigned to you and lose sight of the bigger picture. Only after I changed my approach - I started analyzing how the tasks I performed figured into achieving the greater organization goals - that I then started to think about how I could do things differently to achieve those goals faster. I was able to make a more significant impact and this attitude led to my accelerated career growth. I was more open to sharing my ideas, and defending them and showed more enthusiasm when I worked on them. Changing how I thought about work helped me be more confident and productive, and hence become a more valuable asset to the organization.
