I would recommend the book The Mis-Education of the Negro by Dr. Carter G. Woodson. This book is important because it highlights the ways in which the black community has been mistaught and misunderstood throughout history. It clearly shows how the education system in the United States is failing black students. It argues that the system is designed to perpetuate white supremacy and that it needs to be reformed in order to give black students an equal chance at success. It is an older book (1933), but very relevant to today.

What resulted is this incredible biography of the civil rights leader, which paints a portrait of Malcolm X unlike any other. The winner of the 2020 National Book Award for Non-Fiction, this biography is a must-read. Get it here or at your local bookstore.
There are many great black history books for kids and teens. One book that I would recommend is "The Black Panthers: Vanguard of the Revolution" by Stanley Nelson. This book tells the story of the Black Panther Party, founded in 1966 in Oakland, California. The party was created in response to the police brutality and racism black people faced in the United States. The Panthers quickly became one of the most influential black power organizations. The book does an excellent job of explaining the Panthers' goals and achievements and the challenges they faced. It is a perfect introduction to the history of the black power movement in the United States.
The first book that comes to mind is The Black Candle by Walter White. It's an account of the history of lynching in America, and it's written for adults. But I think that it would be a great introduction to the subject for young people who are interested in learning more about how pervasive racism is in our country, how it has affected people throughout history, and what we can do today to fight against it. There are so many great resources out there that are specifically designed for children and teens, but most of them don't go into as much depth as this book does. This book explores the history of lynching from its inception through the Civil Rights era and beyond, giving the reader a clear understanding of where we've been as a nation and why we still have work to do today.
The Autobiography of Malcolm X. This book is one of the most important to learn about and is a must-read for every child. It’s one of the few books that taught me about the contributions of black people and it’ll be a book I’ll never forget. I think this book is a bestseller for a reason and for the first time, you can learn about the life of Malcolm X from the man himself. When kids learn about history, it’s taught to them from the perspective of people that weren’t there. It’s told by people who may or may not have an agenda. This book is told by the person who lived it and experienced it. It’s a book that I think should be required reading in school because it’s so powerful. It’ll give you a better idea of what life was like back then.
