It's frightening because it features a seemingly impossible to beat threat, since you cannot shoot or kill a fog. You simply need to outrun it. It also has a romance interest in it, which I personally love as it gives the reader something to root for. It may not be as terrifying as modern day reads, but it is certainly one of the best plot lines I've read in the horror genre, and may even be the inspiration for Stephen King's similar book, The Mist.
