For me, the most beneficial aspect of working in a corporate role is having the support, systems, and resources of a large organization backing your efforts. You simply have more to work with when you’re with a corporation, as opposed to a small startup or agency, and this makes it easier and faster to implement ideas and strategies to promote growth. On the flip side, the main downside of working in a corporate environment is that there can be some bureaucracy and additional reporting that you need to do, compared to what’s expected in a smaller agency. There are times you can feel like there are “too many cooks in the kitchen”, as it were. Having a variety of perspectives in leadership can be a benefit, allowing you to see more potential risks and opportunities, but it can also slow down the decision making process, which can be frustrating when you have an immediate challenge to solve.

From clients to employees there are tough questions that need to be answered, and often there is no obvious right answer. The solution here is that I follow my instinct, and consult with my cabinet of advisors to get to the best resolution. The job changes every 3-9 months. As challenges arise, and the business changes, the job of CEO looks different every year. Some of the changes are welcome. Right now we are aggressively focusing on SEO and sales. Other changes are less interesting to me, but still require the urgency and focus to steer the company in the right direction. The bigger a corporation gets the tough it usually is to be nimble. So, I like the freedom that comes with my position to be a tinkerer and to work out better ways to serve the business.
