She even writes in the diary while she is on the run and falling apart in high school. Throughout the book, Nao learns to appreciate her mother and life with her family and begins to move forward with her life.

Not long after that, a boat washes up the shore and brings with it a dead man and his baby daughter who is alive. Isobel convinces Tom to raise the baby as theirs. Everything goes smoothly until the birth mother of the child shows up one day and wants her child back. Tom is accused of murder and kidnapping and he is sent to prison. It breaks the Sherbourne family apart for a while and the baby grows up with her birth mother. Years later, she is now grown up with a son of her own and she visits the Sherbournes to show them her son. She finds out that Isobel died. Tom is just glad to see his daughter again. While this book is predominantly tragic, I like how it reflects the love a mother has for her child. And how it shows us in the end that the bond between a mother and her child may be strained, but it will never be broken.

You are supposed to be 100 percent flawless at all times, or you will be viewed as a dreadful human being. So, you must give up everything and let your child be the center of your whole life. The story of Frida, a mother who, after a moment of poor judgment, must show to the government that she deserves custody of her kid, will resonate with mothers who feel they are being evaluated by an unrealistic standard, i.e., everyone. It is so interesting, makes you think, and is written so beautifully that the next book I tried to read paled in comparison.
