The one check I have to know that I'm losing weight is how much better my clothes fit. They aren't as snug as they once were and I can zip things up easily. That means more to me than what the scale says. After all, one of the primary reasons for losing weight is to look better and be able to wear the clothes I love.
My personal favorite non-scale victory isn’t any specific metric, but rather simply what other people think or say about your appearance. If you are losing weight, your friends and family will be the first to notice and will comment on your progress whether you want them to or not. The perception of others is the easiest way to know if you are losing for sure. After all, you can always trick yourself into thinking you're doing better than you are but there's no way to fool the people around you.
For those who rely on fitness trackers, one metric in particular can give you a clear understanding of how beneficial your workouts are. Don’t rely so much on the numbers on a scale, but the number (and graph) that reflects your cardio fitness, also known as your VO2 score. Your VO2 max measures the maximum amount of oxygen your body can consume during exercise. The higher your VO2 max, the better your cardiorespiratory health is. In other words, the higher your score, the healthier your heart is. A healthy heart and a healthy metabolism go hand-in-hand. A healthier heart is a precursor to your clothes fitting better.
With weight loss comes a renewed sense of energy and vitality that cannot be ignored. Metrics such as how you look in the mirror are great, but what really matters most is how you feel. Not all weight loss is healthy or necessary, which is why using your overall energy as a barometer of progress is a more accurate metric of your real progress than a number on a scale or how you look in the mirror could ever be.
There's a place between muscle growth and weight loss where you physically experience your improvement. As you acclimate to your exercise routine, start shedding pounds and building muscle, there comes a point where you quite literally feel the difference during exercise. Your 30 reps that you struggled with becomes 30 that don't feel like anything. Then you go for 40 reps and it comes surprisingly easy. You feel lighter, stronger and generally more healthy. This feeling of overcoming your limits really highlights your fitness journey. It gives you the drive to keep pushing and a tangible result that you can take pride in.
Nowadays I am able to climb up and down the stairs without panting. This has become my non-scale method now that I have lost weight since before I could not achieve that. There are several other things such as having smaller clothes fitting that would not have fit before. they may seem like minor non-scale weight loss indicators but to me, such are victories worthy of celebration from a place of personal gratitude due to the struggles I have gone through before trying to lose weight.
One of my best non-scale victories that prove you’re losing weight is I am stepping into your old jeans. Everyone dreams of the day they can finally fit back into the jeans they have held onto since college. If you don’t need to do the “dance” to zip your pants or recently had to invest in a belt for the first time in years - those are the most crucial signs of progress. Feeling highly comfortable in your clothes or reducing size is even more crucial than the scale as they’re more precise indications of fat loss versus the fluid transformations you can check on the scale.

Previously, I have been under the prescription of medicines that ease stress but they made me add a lot of weight. I started noting signs of losing weight when the doctor removed such medications from my prescription list and I could wear clothes that used to be small. It means that the personal medical markers have gotten better, such as blood sugar and blood pressure hence a decrease in weight that come with such complications.
Whenever I gain weight, my clothes tend to be more petite and tight, forcing me to change my wardrobe from time to time. However, when they started being a little lost, I realized all my efforts to lose weight were working. It's my favorite non-scale victory that I always check after weeks of exercise and changing diet.
There’s sometime I always do when I want to embark on a weight loss journey. I buy clothes that can’t fit. This sound weird but it is a way I use to know how much my weight loss journey is going fine. I usually buy clothes that are totally my style and worth dying for and they just sit there, promising to hug me well if I manage to lose a little of my fat. They serve as a motivation and I know that I am losing weight when they eventually fit on me. Sometimes, old clothes that can no longer fit also do this job for me; serving as a motivation and a form of reward for all my hard work, especially those ones that I have grown so attached to.
This means I'm increasing my metabolism and, as a result, possibly burning more fat. For example, if I used to skip breakfast in the morning but have recently started eating it and find myself craving it, this is a good sign. Similarly, if I used to eat only two meals per day, but now I eat three meals and a snack and feel hungry for them, I'm increasing my metabolism and preparing my body to lose more fat. So I don't panic! I pay attention to my body and feed it appropriately.

When I catch up on exercise after a long lay off, I tend to notice the muscle tone in my legs start to improve before I notice anything else. More specifically, I start to feel the muscle definition in my hamstrings. It’s one of the first things I notice when I get back on the track, in the weight room or on the Peloton. I start to gain muscle mass and tone in my lower body. The gluts get tighter, the hamstrings get bigger, the quads get stronger and the calves look better. That’s where I feel and see the difference first – in my leg muscles.
For me, one of the most satisfying non-scale victories that prove I am losing weight is that I can now tie my shoelaces without my tummy getting in the way. For years, I would have to hold my breath and suck in my stomach just to be able to reach down and tie my shoes. Now, I can do it without even thinking about it. I've also noticed that my energy levels have increased since losing weight. I used to get winded just walking up a flight of stairs, but now I can jog up them with ease. These small victories may not seem like much, but they've been crucial in helping me stay motivated on my weight loss journey.
Losing weight takes lots of courage and commitment. It doesn't happen overnight, and you must consistently achieve your goal. It gets tough sometimes to develop healthier eating and exercise daily. Nanoscale victories are the outcome of small changes you make to your lifestyle. Favorite non-scale victories include your clothes fit better; you can engage in things you love, and you feel energetic, Your sleep cycle also improves; you're achieving your fitness milestone daily, you can think, and your skin improves. You can save money that you used to spend on unhealthy eating. When you start working on yourself, many things change in your life. Healthy eating has a significant contribution toward healthy and wealthy life. Making your routine well organized is the only way to lose weight. All these non-scale victories prove that you're losing weight and a better future is waiting ahead of you.
The one that I can think of is probably how I can run up my stairs with much less pain and exhaustion than before. Like most people, I feel like I'm in much better shape now than when I started. Also, my face seems to be more visually appealing and I feel like I fit more comfortably into random clothing.

The biggest achievement so far in my weight loss journey is that I can stand from the ground without struggling left and right to get up. It used to be a hassle and now I can just pop-up from the ground. Being able to move freely gives me motivation to lose more weight and fit into my old clothes which I will be able to do soon.

Being able to breathe more easily. People underestimate the degree to which being overweight affects the breath. Extra weight in the gut area takes up room and puts pressure on the lungs. When I’ve lost weight and noticed that I could take in more air than before, without effort, it’s a great feeling. It’s also a sign that your health is improving
Although nothing replaces the accuracy of stepping on a scale, simply feeling how your clothes are fitting is a great first indicator of your progress in your weight loss journey so far. How you look in your clothes is the first thing others will notice about your appearance and thus is a great first indicator for you to use as well.
A lot of times when people are trying to lose weight, their hormone health can stand in the way. This can be because of hormonal issues like insulin resistance and high cortisol. By eating enough protein, healthy fats, and fiber with each meal, you may see more calories, but your blood sugar response will improve! This means no energy crash. Additionally, eating enough, sleeping 8-9 hours, and managing stress will help reduce cortisol. These shifts will improve hormone health and lead to healthy, sustainable weight loss.
When I started my weight-loss program, I was skeptical about its result. However, after three months when I reported to my fitness trainer and dietician about the changes in my weight in the past months, I observed that I had developed a few healthy habits for following the diet plan and aiming at weight-loss. During the program, I noticed that I was more mindful of my lifestyle and gave preference to healthy choices like nutritious food habits and wellness practices. This is how I came to know about the positive impact of my weight-loss plan on my well-being practices that brought me happiness and self-esteem.
