One memorable moment being an Occupational Therapy Assistant is recalled. I interacted with an individual undergoing rehabilitation from a disabling injury, and we aimed to reinstate this person back into daily life. Rather than sinking under the difficulties, I celebrated small wins. On one day, the patient was able to complete a daily activity by himself and this is an act that she had difficulty in performing earlier. This was a rather simple moment but remarkably effective. It emphasized the core of occupational therapy – helping patients reclaim their lives. The happiness and sense of achievement reflected on that patient brought to light the importance of an Occupational Therapy Assistant in more than just helping with physical recovery, but also dignity and independence restoration. It is these moments that highlight the importance of a profession and fuel my commitment to pursue it.
