One day, over a cup of coffee, I found myself engaged in a discussion with a retired veteran about the role of technology in modern warfare. As a tech CEO, my conversation usually revolves around optimization, efficiency and innovation. However, he reminded me of the immense responsibility we hold by highlighting the human element - the soldiers at the front line. This interaction over coffee was an eye-opener, cementing my resolve to create tech that values life and fosters peace, not just productivity.
What perhaps is so fascinating is throughout my life I have had countless meetings and encounters at various coffee shops that have been both profound and transformative. Both serious and constructive and lighthearted conversations for me find their way into coffee shops. One in particular that I would like to share is when I stumbled upon a former close friend of mine who I had not seen in years in a local coffee shop in my hometown. We had each gone off to different universities, moved to different locations, started our careers, and organically lost touch over a period of just under eight years. But interestingly during our high school years, we had always frequented a different coffee shop on the other side of town before this particular one had opened / gained popularity. We always ordered the same coffee drink: an iced macchiato with light ice and extra caramel swirl. We would sit in the corner near the window in the two largest cushioned chairs and spend our Friday afternoons chatting, looking at magazines, and writing short stories in tandem with each other. One day, I was visiting this other local coffee shop that is located closer to the beach in the village. I was standing at the counter and was unsure of what to order until I caught the ‘today’s specials’ list. As I went to select what I was going to order after I was figuring out aloud what I was going to decide upon, the person behind me said, “I would definitely go with the cold brew chai latte.” As I went to turn around and exclaim that was what I finally decided on, I knew I recognized that distinctive voice…it was indeed my friend Melissa who I had not seen in over 10 years. Not only did we still share the same taste, it was a random but exciting encounter with an old friend I had not seen in so long. We ended up catching up for over an hour that afternoon and have continued to stay in touch and see one another at this now new meetup spot as I learned she moved back to our hometown with her new family full-time (we grew up in a seasonal resort area) where we both now live. Now when we get together, we always know what to order each other and have made getting together at this coffee shop a regular occurrence.
A distinct social encounter over coffee that took place in a local cafe is one of the most memorable ones. I had been immersed in work when a friend who hadn't seen me for years walked through the door. We made a decision to have coffee in order not to lag behind. As we drank our drinks, the dialogue continued smoothly as if by magic and old times were talked about while new news of ours was told. What was exciting was how the easy going feel of a cafe encouraged true oneness. One of the main elements that made it possible for authentic, sincere conversation were coffee’s aroma; comforting atmosphere and lack of digital distractions. This became a newfound reunion that would begin as serendipity and point to the magic of coffee breaking barriers between people socializing. It was an indication of the joy that can often be found in merely sharing s cup coffee and how this simple act enables a discussion, which one not nearly soon forget.
