As an English teacher, my goal is to reduce my talking time and increase the students' dialogue. Online training or training when working from home can be very isolated feeling and while you can definitely write a great online training course or slideshow that can teach employees, you want to make sure they have in-person training insight or advice at some point of each month. Let them know that you are there to chat and help them train on a Zoom call, Skype, or Google hangouts call! Every person who tries to learn new things would like some help from someone on the spot if they have questions or concerns.
Depending on the subject, students may think of a class as useless. That's because they are told they had to take it for work, to get credit for a degree, or extra credit, and have no interest in the subject. They don't see how it relates to them. What we have to do as online instructors is connect what students are learning with real life. We have to show them how they can use it every day and also how this subject can make their lives easier or more fulfilling. That can be done in any number of ways. Usually, I give them a hands-on project that secretly involves the subject. Then, they are learning and using it without realizing it. I reveal that bit of information to them when they present it and I ask how they did it.

Engaging learners in self-paced courses in which they see my videos has been very hard. I've set up Slack groups to engage with them, but just a tiny group will be around asking questions. However, I've found a hybrid online course model, very, very useful to keep learners engaged. Instead of offering a bunch of self-paced videos, I offer the students self-paced videos plus a live working session with me every week. That way I can engage with them, attend to their questions, and improve accountability live. This hybrid course strategy has proven to work to keep a very high engagement rate and build better, lasting relationships with my learners.
