During the pandemic outbreaks of respiratory infections including COVID-19, I faced an ethical dilemma with respect to the scarce resources allocation. First, it was to determine how can the ventilator use be prioritized when the demand required far more than what was available. In order to overcome this dilemma, I am actively involved in the ethical debates among the members of the healthcare team. We determined specific, transparent criteria for the ventilator allocation based on illness acuity and recovery potential as well as the opportunity to positively modify outcome. Further, we addressed the ventilator utilization efficiency by evaluating other therapy options and maintaining a constant communication with patients as well as their relatives. This method aimed to combine the ethics of maximizing the benefits with fair and respectful treatment for each particular patient. Though very complex, resolving this ethical issue was a shared decision-making process that focused on the interests of the patients and fair redistribution during times where resources were scarce within heightened health crisis.
