Engaging our learners with real-life benefits-related hurdles has greatly boosted their interest. For example, when they reach goals or conquer challenging courses, they receive discounts for upcoming courses or get a chance to attend exclusive webinars led by industry experts. This approach not only motivates learning but also connects the dots between theory and practice, creating a fulfilling learning journey that directly impacts their professional advancement.
At This is School, Nutty Tilez has been a hit with students and teachers alike since it launched as part of our wider platform in 2014. Taking students over 50 levels of vocabulary (yes, vocabulary!) to support their studies in Modern Foreign Languages, the game offers multiplayer opportunities with peers around the world - plus the opportunity to battle with Demon Dante, the game's ultimate gatekeeper. The success of Nutty Tilez is demonstrated not only in its ability to help students understand and grasp vocabulary through gamification, but the fact that students actively want to play it; we even hear from parents that students are found playing it on holiday, totally independently and outside of their core classroom hours.
One of the ways that we’ve implemented gamification into our courses that we’ve set up for our employees is we’ve created a sort of “learning score board” where employees are scored based on the courses they’ve completed. As they complete more courses, they are awarded a new title for the different levels of success and, at the end of a specific time period set out (depending on the learning content we want to prioritize), we give them a prize. The prizes are usually small, but we’ve noticed that it has made a big difference to our company and encouraging people to improve their skills.
One successful gamification element we implemented in an e-learning course was a points-based reward system. In this system, learners earned points for completing various activities and achieving learning milestones within the course. For example, they could earn points by completing quizzes, participating in discussions, or submitting assignments on time. These points were displayed on a leaderboard. This not only makes it more attractive for learners to engage with but also creates a sense of excitement and accomplishment when they see their name and progress displayed on the leaderboard.Furthermore, to enhance the effectiveness of this gamification element, I have also added rewards for top performers on the leaderboard. For example, the top three learners at the end of each week receive a gift card or a small incentive.
