Staying busy is imperative in overcoming homesickness. Instead of sitting around and thinking about being somewhere else, you need to do things to take your mind off of it. Just go for a walk, visit a new cafe, participate in local events, find a hobby, or whatever interests you. By doing some things in the place you are, you'll forget about the place you want to be. If there's anything I learned about life is that sometimes it's better to allow ourselves to really feel the feelings we're struggling with. Feeling homesick is nothing shameful, and it's no weakness. Giving yourself a day to really think about what you're struggling with, processing, and maybe even letting it all out, can be a good and healthy way to deal with homesickness.
One way to overcome homesickness is to utilize various types of technology to help you feel at home. This could be Facetiming friends and family from back home, watching youtube videos about your hometown, or logging into a live webcam of your city or ski resort nearby. This way you can get a sense of home without actually being there. This can help people who travel a lot, just recently moved, or are at college.

When I was in college, I was very homesick. I called my Mom to tell her that I missed her and then I asked for her pasta sauce recipe. The following day, I went to the grocery store, picked up the ingredients, and made the recipe. I invited four new friends over for dinner. It's clearly a good memory to this day, and definitely helped me with my homesickness.
