In one of my garden designs, I decided to repurpose an old birdbath, turning it not into its intended function but into a succulent garden display. Initially, this birdbath was just a piece that the homeowner wanted to get rid of, but I saw potential in its structure. I filled it with soil and arranged a variety of succulents within it – different textures, heights, and colors came together. It became an immediate talking point for visitors. The circular shape provided a natural arrangement template, and placing it in a location where a statue might typically stand gave it prominence. Integrating this upcycled feature required assessing light conditions suitable for succulent growth and ensuring the birdbath had adequate drainage. This feature proved that unexpected items could breathe life and creativity into a garden, embodying the idea that imagination is instrumental in garden design.
In a recent garden design, I introduced an old, repurposed wine barrel as a rainwater collector, which unexpectedly became the garden's focal point. Situated beneath a downspout at the corner of a patio, the barrel was not only functional, collecting rainwater for irrigation, but also aesthetically pleasing, adding a rustic charm to the setting. Surrounding the barrel, I planted a variety of moisture-loving plants and flowers, creating a lush, green backdrop that highlighted the barrel's wooden texture and rich patina. This setup not only conserved water but also drew attention to sustainable gardening practices. Integrating this element into the garden design demonstrated how everyday objects, when thoughtfully repurposed, can enhance a garden's beauty while emphasizing eco-friendly principles.
I knew my garden was missing something when I looked in my backyard, and it just seemed off. It’s a feeling that many understand, yet few know how to fix it. I decided that my garden was missing a central focal point, and I wanted that focal point to be a trellis arch - something I could make with my own hands, of course. I enjoy the look of a garden arch because it brings refinement to an otherwise natural space. I love the simplicity and wildness of an outdoor garden, but the contrast between something natural and unnatural, untamed and handmade, is beautiful to me, so I went with an arch you could place vining plants on. I purchased a standard second-hand arch from a thrift store and some trellis from my local hardware store, sanded and painted the trellis a tan/brown color, fastened it to the arch, polished the arch, and introduced my plants to it. Now, we have a gorgeous weathered arch with flowering plants and vines in our garden, which certainly enhances the space.
An unexpected addition that became a captivating centerpiece in my garden design was a charming bird bath. I wanted to create a space that not only looked beautiful, but also attracted wildlife. By incorporating the bird bath into the design, it not only added visual interest but also provided a source of water for birds and other small animals. I strategically placed the bird bath near a tree and surrounded it with plants to create a natural and inviting space for birds to gather. The sound of chirping birds and the sight of them splashing in the bird bath quickly became a focal point in my garden, adding an unexpected element that brought life to the space. It also served as a conversation piece for guests who were drawn to the activity happening in the bird bath.
I've always been on the lookout for unique and unexpected elements to incorporate into my designs. One particular element that stands out in my mind is an old wooden door that I came across at a flea market. At first glance, it seemed out of place in a garden setting, but I knew it had the potential to become a focal point. I integrated the door into the design by placing it in the center of a flower bed and surrounding it with climbing plants. The result was a charming and whimsical entrance to the garden that added depth and character to the overall design. Visitors were drawn to this unexpected element, and it became a popular spot for photos and conversation. It just goes to show that sometimes the most unexpected elements can make the biggest impact in a garden design.
One unexpected element I introduced into a garden design was a vertical garden wall made of recycled materials. To integrate it seamlessly, I positioned the wall in a strategic location where it would receive adequate sunlight and serve as a focal point. Using salvaged wooden pallets, I constructed a sturdy framework and lined it with landscape fabric to hold the soil in place. Then, I planted a variety of trailing vines, colorful flowers, and aromatic herbs in the pockets of the wall, creating a lush and vibrant display. The vertical garden not only added visual interest but also maximized space, allowing for more greenery in a limited area. Its unique design sparked curiosity and conversation among visitors, making it a standout feature in the garden design.
An unexpected touch in my garden design was the addition of a mosaic wall. It was something that I had seen in other gardens before and always admired, so I decided to try my hand at it. At first, I wasn't sure how well it would fit into the overall design of my garden, but once completed, it became a beautiful focal point that added a unique touch to the space. The vibrant colors and intricate design of the mosaic wall captured the attention of anyone who entered the garden. To integrate it into the space, I made sure to choose colors and patterns that complemented the plants and flowers in my garden. I also strategically placed it in an area where there was plenty of natural light to enhance its beauty.Additionally, I added some potted plants and hanging vines around the mosaic wall to create a more cohesive look.Overall, the unexpected element of the mosaic wall not only added visual interest but also served as a conversation starter for visitors. It showed that even in small gardens, there are endless possibilities to incorporate unique and creative elements that can become focal points. It also inspired me to continue experimenting with different materials and designs in future garden projects.
A water feature is often used to add a touch of tranquility and beauty to garden designs. However, in one of my recent projects, I decided to take it up a notch by incorporating an unexpected element - a large stone fountain. This became the focal point of the garden as its size and unique design immediately caught the eye. To integrate it into the overall design, I surrounded it with lush green plants and colorful flowers to create a natural and cohesive look. The sound of running water added a peaceful ambiance to the garden, making it a favorite spot for relaxation and meditation. The unexpected addition of the stone fountain not only enhanced the visual appeal but also brought an element of surprise and delight to the garden design. It serves as a perfect example of how a simple element can transform an ordinary garden into a unique and memorable space.
I've been working on a garden design for a client who wanted to create an outdoor entertainment space that would be equally functional and visually appealing. As I was brainstorming ideas, one element that came to mind was an outdoor fireplace. It's not something that you typically see in a garden setting, but I thought it could add a unique touch and serve as a gathering point for social gatherings. To integrate the fireplace into the design, I made sure to choose materials and colors that would complement the overall aesthetic of the garden. I also positioned it in a central location, surrounded by comfortable seating and outdoor lighting to create a cozy atmosphere. Additionally, I incorporated elements such as fire-resistant plants and decorative features around the fireplace to enhance its integration into the garden. The end result was a stunning focal point that not only added warmth and ambiance but also brought the entire design together in a cohesive manner.
Surprise in the Garden- Turning an Old Bike into Something Special Once, I used an old bike in a garden to make it extra unique. The rusty bike became a cool home for colorful flowers. Placed near a cozy spot to sit, it made the garden more interesting and fun. People liked talking about it, and it added a playful feeling to the garden. This simple trick showed me that using unusual things can make a garden look even better and tell a cool story.
