I grew up across the street from a neighbor who had a vegetable garden in his backyard. He loved coming up from work and letting off a little steam (when daylight and weather permitted) by working in his garden. He did the most work in his garden during the weekends. He dug, he planted, he got his hands dirty and he worked up a sweat. The vegetables he grew ranged from tomatoes to jalapeno peppers – and they were fresh and delicious. And he loved to share his vegetables with his neighbors. He practically provided the entire neighborhood with produce, which they deeply appreciated and enjoyed. It wasn’t a side hustle. He didn't charge people for his veggies. It was a hobby. It made people happy, but he also did it for selfish reasons. He had a physical outlet. He had a de-stresser. His garden provided him with all of that. I have followed his lead and I know firsthand how beneficial it is to have a garden to tend to on the weekends.
On a flight we are told that when the oxygen mask comes down to give ourselves oxygen first before you help the person next to you. You can't take care of anyone else until you take care of yourself. This process does not have to be complicated. You can de-stress one part of your body based on the part that needs your attention the most. Give yourself a facial or massage a good skin cream onto your skin to relax your muscles or soak your feet while you are watching your favorite television program. If you don't have time to pamper yourself from head to toe, select the part of your body that really needs your attention to help you relax. Love of self is important. It does not mean you are selfish; it means you are tuned into what your body and mind need to be your best self for you and those around you. Living your best life includes mind, body, and soul. Before you know it, you will be giving yourself a full spa day at home from head to toe!
While it is true that I thoroughly enjoy every aspect of my work, nothing beats a few rounds of paintball in our own business backyard. This might not be a huge surprise for everyone who works with me because they know how much I enjoy every aspect of the sport right from running the business side of things to developing and procuring the latest gear. But when it comes to winding down and destressing over the weekends, getting down and dirty (and preferably, not painted) on the oldest paintball field in Michigan is what prepares me for yet another busy week in the paintball business.
It may seem counter-intuitive, but by spending a small amount of time working on tasks you dislike on the weekends, you can release yourself from a lot of lingering stress from the week. On Saturday or Sunday, set a timer for 25 minutes and sit down at your computer with the sole task of tackling any outstanding items from the past week. I love playing video games on the weekend to help me relax after a long week. I usually split up my time and set a time limit so I am not playing video games all day long. I believe it is healthy to have a balanced life. I used to play video games non-stop around 80 to 90 hours a week when I was growing up because it was an escape from the bullies at school. But then I got addicted to gaming and that's all I did. I went to school, came home, and then played video games. It helps me take my mind off work, chores, and many of other things that are swirling around in my brain during the week.
One of the best ways I like to de-stress on weekends is to connect with my loved ones. Spending quality time with family and friends can be incredibly rewarding, and it helps me to forget about my worries and take a break from the stress of everyday life. I like to engage in activities that promote social connection and positive emotions, such as going for a walk or having a walk in the park.
