The best piece of home gym equipment is one that you can use for multiple applications. I love using a suspension trainer, like a TRX System, for full-body workouts without needing a lot of space. These systems are particularly good at training the upper body with pullups and rows, which help work some of the muscles that are essential for climbing. Suspension training also helps build stabilizing muscles like those in your back and abs. Targeting these muscles makes suspension training more effective and helps improve balance. You can also use these systems to work the lower body, giving you a great full-body workout you can do with very little equipment.
My favorite piece of gym equipment that I love using at home is the pull up bar. It's simple, highly effective and can be brutal. A pull up bar is a really versatile piece of kit. You can target your back with the overhand grip or target your biceps with the underhand trip. Any type of pull up will be working your arms. They can be made easier with a resistance band. Even more you can perform knee raises or the more advanced leg raises, which are insanely good for your abs. One of my favorite 'exercises' on the pull up bar is the dead hang. Just hang from the bar. This is fantastic for shoulder health, decompressing the spine and correcting posture if you're sat at a desk all day. A pull up bar is inexpensive and also really versatile. You can get bars that fit around the door frame (no screws needed) or can twist into place (again no screws needed).

I'm obsessed with my treadmill desk! People always ask me if it was difficult adjusting to it. There's definitely a short adjustment period, but it's amazing how quickly you adapt and it becomes automatic. I walk all day while working, and I don't even think about it. It's just in the background, like breathing. Walking while I work helps me think better. And studies show that walking has some serious health benefits, including lengthening your life expectancy. I highly recommend trying a treadmill desk!
I love adjustable dumbbells in my home gym because they save significant space and money. I can replace dozens of fixed dumbbells with a single pair and have access to all the same exercises. And with weights ranging from 5 lbs to as much as 100+ lbs, I can train without limitation. A full set of traditional dumbbells covering that same weight range would cost thousands and take up valuable space in my home gym. But with adjustable dumbbells, I can spend a fraction of the cost and take up less than 5 square feet. I especially love the dial system dumbbells because I can change the weight in seconds, allowing me to perform supersets with a minimal break.

I love using my resistance bands because they help me keep my form unlike dumbbells. Dumbbells people can cheat and not use proper form or techniques. Plus they are also expensive where resistance bands you can buy an ajustable set on Amazon for like 20 dollars. I also like being able to take them down to my shore house and use them as well so I can workout wherever I am. Plus they are light to carry around and barely take up any room.
I recently started a workout program that incorporates a step, and I'm shocked I went so long without it. An exercise step offers so much flexibility without taking up a ton of space — and you're much less likely to throw out your back lifting a step than you are a heavy weight. Do you have trouble getting into the workout mindset? A step is the perfect multitasking tool. You can walk up and down your step during a work call. Or do dips and ab workouts while watching TV or listening to a podcast. Add asymmetric moves into your laundry folding routine by doing ten squats or pushups with one leg or arm on the step and the other on the ground. I've been working out for more than 15 years now. When the COVID pandemic started, I arranged a small gym in my apartment. The setup is incredibly simple: an adjustable bench and adjustable dumbbells. Adjustable dumbbells enable me to train my shoulders (middle, rear, and front deltoids), back, biceps, triceps, glutes, and legs (quads, hamstrings, calves). If you add a bench to your setup, you'll also be able to train your chest. The only muscle group I struggle to train with my setup is my quads. I enjoy doing squats with a dumbbell, but a 50lb dumbbell is simply not enough for me, and squatting while holding two dumbbells in front of your chest is just not convenient. Several sets of reverse flys and shoulder touches under tension helps to combat the negative impact of sitting for hours on end.

Yes, you can obviously do yoga on them, but you can also use them for a ton of other exercises – like crunches, planks, mountain climbers, and virtually any other exercise that requires you to be on the ground. Plus, you can also move your yoga mat around wherever you want to at home, so you aren’t trapped in just one spot. Personally, I love being able to take mine outside when the weather is nice to get some fresh air and sunshine when working out!
