In my own experience, I don’t find NYC particularly unsafe to visit. Manhattan is relatively safe to stay in versus many other cities in America, and Brooklyn has many neighborhoods worth visiting that are not only safe but affluent. Downtown Manhattan, in particular, is a popular tourism center, and from the East Village to the West, Soho, FiDi, the LES, and so on, are all safe to walk around and stay in the majority of the time. There is much to be said for practicing caution and self-awareness when visiting any major city. Williamsburg is a very built-up area of Brooklyn with many things to do, and Long Island City in Queens is a similar parallel just north of there. For your first visit, consider traveling with a friend to boost your knowledge and confidence, but generally speaking, you have little to worry about.

Plus, with convenient access to the Staten Island Ferry, visitors can easily explore Manhattan's top attractions while enjoying a peaceful getaway in this tranquil NYC neighborhood.

Greenwich Village is also known for its cultural and historical landmarks, like Washington Square Park, and its numerous restaurants, bars, and shops. Despite its central location in Manhattan, Greenwich Village maintains a unique charm with tree-lined streets and beautiful townhouses, making it feel like a small community within the larger city. I would highly recommend checking out the Upper East Side of NYC. Not only it is one of the safest places to stay, but it's extraordinarily beautiful, with plenty of greenery, beautiful architecture, luxurious brownstones and high-end apartments, making it a great choice to spend your days. But keep in mind that the prices might seem a bit higher than in other parts of the city mainly because it's located near many of the city's top attractions, including the renowned Central Park and the Metropolitan Museum of Art. It's always important to be aware of your surroundings and take basic safety precautions. But overall, I believe it's a great choice for those looking for a safe place to stay in NYC.
I'd love to share my personal favorite safe spot in NYC - Fresh Meadows. The neighborhood is tucked away in Queens, and it offers a tranquil, almost suburban setting amidst the bustling city. One of the reasons why I recommend it is the peace and safety it provides. In my experience, I've always found the people there welcoming and the streets well-lit and clean. There's an abundance of green spaces, like Cunningham Park, where you can enjoy leisurely strolls. The area also has a good selection of shops and restaurants that add to its charm. While Staten Island has the lowest crime index in NYC, it isn't really the best place to stay as a visitor. For that, I'd recommend finding something in Midtown. Midtown has by far the highest concentration of tourists in NYC for a reason - it is safe due to a fairly regular police presence, packed with attractions and you won't look out of place if you spend a bit of time gawking. You'll have a hard time finding less than reputable hotels, there is plenty to do with kids and can accommodate visitors on any budget, making it the clear choice for me.

When I visit New York City, I usually stay in Greenwich Village. It's to the west of Manhattan, along the Hudson River, and it's a beautiful place to be while in the busiest city in the world. It also provides you with that 'New York' picture you have in your head, with beautiful trees lining the streets, an abundance of parks to visit, and some of the best restaurants in all of NYC. You will feel safe while visiting Greenwich Village, and will also feel like you've gotten the entire New York City experience! It's a wonderful area to be.
