I am a clinical geneticist; we are medical doctors that take care of patients and families with rare genetic conditions, including helping them find a diagnosis (naming the "why" of their symptoms) as well as guiding them in the management of their condition. I first became interested in the field of rare genetic diseases because I always love a good mystery, and I root for the underdog. Just being able to provide a name for a person's lifelong struggle is so powerful; it leads to their validation and others can bear witness to it and understand it better. Every day, I am awestruck by the perseverance of the families I help. In turn, they have taught me so much on how to live my life. I am a better person for it.

As a graduate student, I worked on a genomic project exploring the genetic diversity of rare plants to identify potential genetic changes that could be used in conservation. The work showed the power of genomics to transform health, but also impacted on biodiversity and conservation, an incredibly exciting prospect. But the night that solidified my species affinity, the moment that won me over, was when we found a new genetic marker, one not previously known for this critically endangered species of plant. Suddenly, we could breed a hybrid that would help us conserve the plant in museum collections – one of those concrete demonstrations of how genomics can influence what’s happening in the world around us, a reminder of why I still adore genomics.
