As a parent of two Montessori-educated children, I have encountered many skeptical friends and family members. In my experience, controversy over the Montessori model is often related to social development and structured learning. For social development, Montessori schools are controversial because they tend not to impose structured social demands upon children. However, in my experience, social interactions in a Montessori school are spread throughout the entire day and are thus more natural, realistic, and meaningful, and there are constant opportunities for practice. For structured learning, Montessori schools are considered controversial because they may not structure learning in a traditional way. However, in my experience, the Montessori classroom is highly structured but each child is considered a unique individual with their own learning styles and needs. By design, the curriculum adapts and caters to each student, providing unique opportunities for learning and growth.
