I've always been moved by film - as far back as I can remember. Around high school I finally put my finger on why. Film is one of the best ways to communicate a feeling. I've been able to capture thousands of beautiful moments and feelings others feel on film, like a time capsule for my clients. It's a cool job, and I know it has significance far beyond me. A photo can only communicate so much, whereas film captures visuals, sound and what it felt like then and there. I love that!
As a music producer with over 20 years of experience and having worked on film scores for several Hallmark and Lifetime movies, I can confidently say that my passion for motion pictures and film stems from the ability to create a powerful emotional connection with the audience through music.
Movies can be pure, escapist entertainment. When a film really engages you and draws you in, you feel like you can forget the world and live a life that isn't your own. This applies across genres, sparking different emotions from fear to exhilaration. Aside from video games, films are one of the most powerful and immersive ways to become part of a new story and world.
There's something mysterious about the way film is able to transport us into someone else's vision, a new world, or a different life. Behind the camera - the art of storytelling is such a delicate and messy thing to prefect. Yet, many minds bend together on set to paint a moving picture. It's almost like magic. There's always hope that a viewer will be able to take a moment, turn down the dial on our ever-changing world, and find themselves in a new place. They may learn something new about themselves along the way.
Stanley Kubrick said, "The screen is a magic medium ... that no other art form can hope to tackle." I think this best sums up why I'm passionate about motion pictures and film. In my opinion, film is the perfect marriage of so many art forms. Whenever you discover that rare combination of original story, max-effort performance, exquisite composition, perfect lighting, sensational sound and unforgettable setting, few things equal this pleasure. This, of course, rarely happens but the masterpieces endure nonetheless. Despite their subjectivity, all great films have a certain authority behind them that can be felt. I think it's this overarching feeling that inspires the rest of us to tell the very best stories we can.
Why? Why has to be the most complex question, and yet the most simplistic. Why motion pictures and film; it lets me tell a story, shape light, create a singular shot that tells a story within the larger story, or symbolizes the story or theme. But really, there's more than that. The craft of producing a film, a film you care about, can be the convergence of many passions, and the film medium becomes the method in which I allow those passions to collide. For me, much of my work revolves around steam locomotives and heritage railroads; Rail preservation and steam locomotives are one of my biggest passions, mirrored by my passion for film. Getting to cross the two is the best of both worlds and enables me to pull from passion for not only the art of film making but the history and drama of my subjects that I am so interested in. It allows me to see the history and stories in a different way from my peers and has driven my efforts as a cinematographer and railway preservationist.
Film lets me turn dreams into reality and tell stories that touch the heart and soul. It captures the thrill of adventure and the beauty of life. Every project challenges me and helps me grow. My goal is to inspire and make a positive impact through the stories I share.
The magic of filmmaking remains in shooting on celluloid. Aside from the inherent beauty of the medium, I love the level of craftsmanship and precision it can require as well as the universal focus that is felt in the room when the camera’s motors begin to roll. In an age where you can roll infinitely on a digital censor, shooting motion picture film requires you to be judicious in your decision making and operate at a certain level of efficiency. All these factors lead to a better film. The energy of set is as much of an ingredient in the image as a lamp. The electricity felt during a magical take affects the performance and the next shot being set up. Little else feels as rewarding as an entire crew celebrating the success of a film and even fewer things feel more gut wrenching when a project you loved making ends. Each film takes on a life of its own.
I really love my job; being a director is about telling stories and conveying emotions. It is important to understand that it is a team effort where all areas must be in synergy since everything seen in front of the camera tells us something: warm light coming through a window, an empty table with food scraps, a melody overlapping with distant voices. I like the versatility of audiovisual work; each piece allows me to enter/create a different world, sometimes closer to reality, sometimes completely fictional. My goal is to try to evoke some kind of feeling in those who watch my pieces.
With nearly two decades in the motion picture and film industry, my passion for storytelling remains as strong as ever. The question I always come back to is: "Why are you passionate about motion pictures and film?" For me, the answer lies in the profound power of storytelling and its ability to resonate with audiences. Despite the industry’s challenges—such as pitching to financiers, refining concepts, and navigating complex project developments—the drive to tell compelling stories fuels my work. The abundance of storytelling methods today means there are countless opportunities to explore new ideas, but it’s crucial to discern which ones to pursue. The road is often paved with rejection, but each "no" brings you closer to a "yes" and a refined vision. Rejection, in many ways, is a catalyst for improvement. We rarely start with perfect ideas; instead, we begin with a spark that needs nurturing. This process of honing and evolving ideas keeps the passion alive, as obsessing over and perfecting a concept prepares you for the eventual project. As a director and producer, you must ask yourself why you want to tell this story and what creative elements you wish to explore. This meticulous thought process, from pre-production to release, requires deep reflection on the message you want to convey and how to engage your audience. The satisfaction of creating a story that leaves a lasting impact is immensely fulfilling, especially after collaborating with many talented artists. Ultimately, the passion for film comes from finding personal meaning within the stories you tell. Identifying why you are the right person for a project—based on your experiences and knowledge—drives you through the challenges. In a fiercely competitive field where each project is evaluated on its own merit, maintaining passion is not always easy. Yet, if you are dedicated to making a meaningful impact and telling stories that resonate with you, persistence is essential. Building a career in film means staying consistent and diverse in your work. The more you produce, the more you demonstrate that you’re the right person to bring a project to fruition, answering the fundamental question: Why are you passionate about motion pictures and film?
The Powerful Medium of Motion Pictures And Film Video productions, in their many variations, can be a powerful medium for sharing ideas, inspiring others, engaging with people and conveying information. Films provide their audience with the opportunity to place themselves in the environment that is being explained. A social issue, such as poverty, can be difficult to describe. Viewed within the realistic environment, the issue is presented, allowing the viewer rather than the creator to develop interpretations. Films may generate a greater understanding of the issue as the viewer is drawn to their emotion responses. I am very passionate about how motion pictures and film are a powerful medium and can provides many opportunities for expression and interpretation.
I think I'm passionate about movies and film for the same reason that many people are - it is a medium that has the ability to tell powerful stories that resonate with people across cultures and generations. This mass appeal is what makes them so special, because I can share the emotions the film made me feel with others that have seen it regardless of where they're from or what they're like and we will be able to connect at some level. Films can evoke deep emotions, provoke thought, and inspire change by shedding light on different perspectives and experiences - something that I admire and aspire to in my own work, even though it isn't in the film industry.
As someone deeply involved in the water feature and outdoor living industry, I've found an unexpected passion for motion pictures and film, particularly in how they relate to and enhance our work. Film has become an invaluable tool for showcasing our products and installations. The moving image captures the dynamic nature of water in a way that still photos simply can't match. I get excited about using cinematic techniques to highlight the interplay of light, water, and landscaping in our designs. Moreover, nature documentaries and films featuring stunning outdoor scenes have been a huge source of inspiration for our water feature designs. I often find myself taking notes during these films, thinking about how we could recreate certain effects or atmospheres in our customers' backyards. I'm also fascinated by how films can transport viewers to different environments. This aligns perfectly with our goal of creating immersive, tranquil spaces through our water features. I often draw parallels between filmmaking and designing outdoor spaces - both are about creating experiences and evoking emotions. The storytelling aspect of film has influenced how we present our products and services. We've started creating short documentary-style videos about our installation process and the impact of our water features on people's lives. These have been incredibly effective in connecting with potential customers on an emotional level. Lastly, my passion for film has led us to experiment with projection mapping on water surfaces for special events, blending the world of digital imagery with our physical water features in exciting new ways. So while it might seem unrelated at first, my passion for motion pictures and film has become an integral part of how we approach our business and connect with our customers.
Motion pictures and film have always held a special place in my heart because they possess the unparalleled ability to tell stories that resonate on a deeply emotional level. Before becoming the CEO of Kate Backdrop, I worked as a photographer, and it was then that I truly appreciated the power of visual storytelling. The way a camera lens can capture fleeting moments and turn them into lasting memories is nothing short of magical. Film, in its essence, extends this magic by weaving together visuals, sound, and narrative to create a compelling experience that can influence, inspire, and change perspectives. This profound impact on humanity is what drives my passion for the medium.
