Malnourished bears struggle to raise cubs, leading to observable shifts in their hunting strategies, movements, and overall behaviors.
Although my primary focus is software and web development, I've closely followed the work of wildlife biologists and have seen how environmental changes can dramatically alter animal behavior. One notable instance is the way temperature changes have impacted migration patterns. As climate change has led to warmer winters, many migratory species are either arriving earlier or staying longer in areas that were once too cold for them. This shift not only affects the species' life cycles but also the ecosystems that depend on their migration patterns for survival. This behavioral change highlights the interconnectedness of nature and how technology and data can help track these shifts. In our field, we see a parallel in how digital tools and data are increasingly used to monitor wildlife patterns. For conservationists, embracing technological solutions to collect, analyze, and adapt to these changes is crucial. My advice is to utilize innovative tools and technologies to help monitor, predict, and understand these complex behaviors as environmental factors continue to evolve.
We were hired to help landscape a home in a cookie cutter suburb, but when we arrived, my jaw dropped. The homeowner had rehabilitated her lot from sod and clay into something that looks more like the local forests. She let leaves breakdown, kill the grass, and turn into topsoil. Clover, plantain, and dandelions grew in the spots where leaves killed it. She planted native trees and shrubs around the house. I'm sure that she was in trouble with the HOA for a while, but her lot was gorgeous all year round. Especially considering that it stayed filled with birds that help control the pests in her garden, rabbits that ate the clover and plantain, et cetera. Other than her neighbors, no one in the community ever saw any wildlife. I'm not suggesting that you get in trouble with your HOA to do this, but it's gorgeous, and better for wildlife.
