Bemana has engaged in a number of volunteer opportunities over the years, from trash pick-ups to foreign sponsorships, and one thing that's surprised me is how many clients and candidates we've landed through these partnerships. I certainly wasn't pursuing volunteerism as a way to land business -- that's an incredibly cynical approach -- but it is an undeniably excellent form of networking. Sharing altruistic experiences brings people together, whether fellow volunteer or beneficiary. The connections my firm have made this way are deep and long-lasting. In fact, I've found these relationships to be some of my most meaningful business connections. I consider these people friends in addition to clients, and I think the fact that volunteering can change both your personal and professional trajectory simultaneously is testament to its power.
