Is a new boiler cheaper to run compared to a renewable heating system - ie heat pumps? In terms of capital costs, in most cases, a new gas boiler's total purchase and installation cost is less than that of a heat pump system. Running costs, on the other hand, are a different matter. Heat pumps might be more expensive to buy and install but are far more energy efficient, and long-term running costs can be much cheaper, as you can use less electricity and convert more energy into proper heat. They are also eligible for government incentives and tend to be more affordable to maintain. In comparison, gas prices fluctuate, traditional boilers might achieve different levels of efficiency, and ongoing costs could be higher.
