After 20 years of being an entrepreneur, I finally figured out what my real purpose is in business—to maximize human potential. I always acted on this, but I didn't consciously realize it was what motivated me until recently. When I focus on people, everything aligns, so now I constantly ask myself, "Is this helping people maximize their potential?" When I have an employee who's not working out, I no longer ask, "How do we get rid of this person? They're not helping the business!" Instead, I ask, "Is this person maximizing their potential here? If not, am I helping them by allowing them to stay here, or should I help them find a different job where they can thrive?" If a project isn't profitable, I ask, "Does it serve this client for us to lose money working with them? Can we do our best work that way? Does subpar work help them maximize their potential?" When I focus on maximizing potential, long-term potential, everything comes together for everyone.
From an anthropological perspective, the concept of a higher purpose could be understood through the innate human need for meaning. Understanding the cultural context in which we operate, and the meaning people give to their experiences is crucial for any person and business. My higher purpose is to create meaningful change in the world. This is why I work in a research role, using the tools of anthropology to understand the needs of others and infuse that understanding into all aspects of my business. By creating a sense of connection and shared values with my team and customers, I believe we can achieve more sustainable and fulfilling outcomes for all parties involved.

We believe in setting talented people free through the power of ownership - that the modern world of work needs fundamental change, starting with the relationship of people to the businesses they serve. We believe that the traditional employment relationship is rooted in 19th and 20th century traditions and paradigms that don’t serve anyone well anymore - so we’re considering nothing sacred and embarking on a journey of “revolutionary capitalism” with radically aligned incentives for every employee in the business: To begin with, we’ve made everyone an owner of the business - whether part of the venture studio or an operating unit, each employee has an ownership stake. We’ve also tied compensation to profitability - meaning no one earns a salary, but when we make money, everyone reaps the benefits through our talent profit pool - we all succeed or fail together, and the alignment of incentives produces a very cohesive culture.
We are a next-generation mental wellness company with one goal in mind – showing the world the power of psychedelics to catalyze lasting change. Traditional medicines have been abused, crammed down the throats of the public (figuratively speaking) and oversold. And they’ve been oversold not just in terms of quantity, but in terms of how their effectiveness has been overstated. It has caused more harm than good. Meanwhile, ketamine therapy is the safer and better alternative. My mission is to erase the stigma of psychedelics and educate people on its effectiveness. It works faster than traditional antidepressants and it is far safer. It’s a tall order to change the way people address their own mental wellness – and to do so with something that has been stigmatized by government and society since the 1960s. But that is the business I run. And it also happens to be my higher purpose.
Despite the conflicts, having a higher purpose in my business allows me to find meaning in my work and relationships. They work hard to transcend my egos and sacrifice for the greater good. Despite constant pressures to conform, I treat another with respect and engage in constructive conflict. Positive peer pressure emerges to support high levels of collaboration among our employees, who have a win-win mentality. Leadership emerges from the bottom up as well as from the top down. Meetings are generative, and my organization's members co-create the future. We work in an organization of excellence. Customers and other external constituents are drawn to and confirm the distinction by participating in the co-creation of products and services.
Having a higher purpose for your business can be a tie that binds the mentality and purpose of your business together for everyone under it's umbrella. Much like a mission statement, your businesses higher purpose can be something that aligns employees thoughts and motives to those of your business. Your purpose defines more than just your business standards but also acts as a guidepost to the actions of your business beyond the workday. It can define how your business makes considerations about charitable donations, reputation and public image. These elements can create a defined sense of self for your business, which becomes representative of it's leadership, employees and operations. It's the glue that binds all these element together and creates your identity as a business. Higher purpose plays a factor in all forms of representation that your business present to the world at large. It shouldn't go unspoken or ignored.
A brand's purpose goes beyond making it unique. Moreover, I believe it sheds light on a company's evolutionary path. As a business, we have been driven by ingraining a purpose at the local level. Make a purpose statement that articulates your business's new purpose-driven goals. Then, determine what needs to be changed at each point of contact with employees and customers in order to align with this mission. Organizations' purposes are driven by their managers. In order to achieve this, they must have to ensure that each employee taps into the motivation behind their own relationship to the company's mission. Employees should compare the statement with their day-to-day operations and business processes. Determine what needs to be done differently and how to do it. When each employee, team, and department understands what purpose means in their daily rituals, this process will gain traction.
Our mission is to improve the world by helping businesses share their unique ideas and value. Everything we do is around that central idea. This is why we don't approach SEO with the goal of simply driving more traffic to a website. Instead, we want to empower businesses to reach more people and grow. This means giving them the sales collateral they need to clearly illustrate what they do, increasing their presence so people struggling can find them, and providing assets that reduce the pain points of their prospects. Essentially, we create ecosystems of support for our clients so they can improve the lives of more people. By focusing on real people and real challenges, we get our clients real results.
Leaders may motivate individuals within an organization to contribute more vigor and originality to their work by helping them connect with a sense of a higher purpose. Businesses may also improve long-term, overall performance by connecting to a higher purpose that people in their community/audience can get behind. Employees (and organizations) are more devoted and engaged when they feel connected and believe their work has purpose. They are more willing to take chances, gain knowledge, and improve.

Motivation is key in business. While we all want to be successful, we also need to set challenging goal posts for ourselves that we can feel motivated to reach. Staying motivated by giving yourself goals provides not only a higher purpose, but a pathway of celebrated milestones to reach the your end goal. Having micro goals that eventually lead to a macro goal makes for the perfect kind of incentive to keep yourself motivated professionally. If things come to easily you can move your goal posts to add a bit of challenge. If they're too difficult, you can always choose to celebrate and appreciate the smaller successes along the way. Keep your goals in sight and work to achieve them, you'll be able to maintain a strong drive by setting up points along the road to success.
My higher purpose is to serve others, whether they are my team members, investors in my business, or the clients I'm privileged to work with. This higher purpose leads me to continually seek ways to improve the welfare of my employees in my company, improve relations with investors and prioritize customer needs so that I can be of great service to them. Overall, it made me learn to steer my business in the most professional way because the success that ensues from this allows me to serve them better.
