There is one skill I keep coming back to when I think about what will matter most as technology evolves. And it is not a technical skill. It is sense making. Many of the skills can now be supported or accelerated by AI tools. But I believe the ability to make meaning out of complexity is different. Sense making is the capacity to step back, connect dots across domains, and understand what something actually means in a specific context. You have to interprete signals, not just process information. And it requires judgment, experience, and a real understanding of human dynamics. As a coach and AI consultant I see in my work that as information becomes abundant and answers become cheap, clarity becomes rare and valuable. Leaders are no longer valued for having the most data but for knowing what to pay attention to, what to question, and what to ignore entirely. The people who stand out are not the fastest users of tools. They are the ones who can frame the right problem in the first place. Who can hold ambiguity without rushing to resolve it. Who translate insights into decisions that people actually commit to. Sense making is deeply human. It involves values, ethics, and responsibility. As the capabilities of AI become more advanced, one of the skills that will continue to grow in importance is decision-making amidst ambiguity. With much of the task or function being automated like execution and retrieving information, the opportunity for differentiation lies more in one's ability to read machine-generated output. Challenge the foundational assumption on which that output has been generated; and determine the significance of the output. Although AI generates options at scale, it lacks the ability to comprehend the intricacies of an organization, long-term trade-offs, as well as the ethical implications of its output. Therefore, individuals who possess the ability to evaluate AI-generated intelligence and filter viable signal from noise, while making logical decisions in the presence of incomplete or conflicting data, differentiate themselves in the workplace. Decision-making amidst ambiguity will operate as a "control layer" over automation within an AI-augmented workplace. As these tools continue to advance, it will become increasingly important for leaders and organization stakeholders to understand both when it is appropriate to utilize these tools, to disregard their output, as well as how to integrate the machine-generated output with the human context. Although technical proficiency remains necessary, discernment, prioritization and strategic interpretation are the components that change AI from a productivity-enhancing and time-saving tool to a true competitive advantage.
The most valuable skill as AI gets more capable is defining your verbal identity. Your voice has to set the tone before any tool touches a draft. I have watched teams ship hundreds of AI-written pieces fast, only to see quality sag and topics overlap because no voice or point of view guided the work. When we start with beliefs, style rules, and a clear stance, AI becomes an amplifier rather than a crutch. Our best work begins with a human hook and summary, criteria that reflect what we stand for, and then AI helps with speed, research, and structure. In my work, that approach led to pieces that were cited and drew in prospects who trusted the perspective before we ever spoke. Platforms reward lived experience and a clear author voice, so personality beats volume. The practical move is to write down what you believe, how you speak, and what you refuse to publish, and use that to guide prompts and edits. Do that, and AI will scale your output without sanding off the edges that make you memorable.
Look, if you ask me what really matters right now, it's problem decomposition. It's the one skill that's actually getting more valuable as AI gets smarter. AI doesn't have ideas into your infrastructure constraints. Someone has to understand that the solution feels right externally but will fail down the road. I've rebuilt our production pipeline 3 times in 18 months because AI model drift and change behavior unguardedly. The skill I need most right now is people who are able to look at AI generated content or code and immediately say "wait, what edge case is this missing?" Most workers assume the output of AI is correct because it sounds confident. The valuable skill is knowing when to override the AI recommendation despite the fact it has come from a system that everyone trusts. That is a more critical judgment as AI keeps taking on more and more jobs, not less.
The skill that is gaining more value is being able to translate technical AI outputs into plain language that non-technical people can actually understand. In our company, we have an AI-powered server monitoring system that gives us an alert when our server's performance drops. The alerts would come in the form of "CPU throttling detected at 87% capacity with 3.2ms latency spike on node eu-west-2." This is accurate information but completely useless to a customer who just wants to know if their game server is going to crash during their tournament tonight. So my job now is taking that AI-generated technical data and giving it a spin so that it says, "Your server is running fine." We did find one small slowdown but corrected it before you noticed anything wrong with your game. You're good to go." Sure, AI can identify problems faster than I ever could. But it can't explain those problems in a way that makes someone feel confident and not confused. Companies are adding AI tools everywhere but most employees don't understand the outputs. This is why someone needs to be between the AI and the end user and translate. The more AI we put in it, the more translators we need. And that's not going away anytime soon.
At La Grande Marketing, I have seen an important transition. Technical expertise is no longer sufficient. In my years of working with data-driven marketing systems, I learned that the the only thing that cannot be replicated by software is high-level strategy and emotional intelligence. AI tools can create a campaign plan but are not able to comprehend the social content or irrationality that affects human purchases. This is why interpreting and acting upon subtle human behavior is today the most valuable skill that a professional can have. To adapt to these changes, we realized that humans make purchases based on emotions and so we focused our recruitment efforts on finding people who were experts that could help us fill that gap. One way that we did this was by asking our employees to discuss the inspirations for their data instead of just the data itself. Understanding which outputs can be trusted and which require scrutiny is the difference between effective AI users and those who are willing to accept any and all suggestions presented to them by AI. Prompting ability is responsible for the gap in performance from user to user. Getting useful outputs requires understanding problem framing, providing context and iteration until results are as expected. Engineers who turn vague requirements into specific prompts give work in less time than those who use AI as a search engine. This skill brings together domain knowledge and knowing how AI understands instructions.
The rapid advancement of Artificial Intelligence has provided teams with many more options, while at the same time limiting the number of high-quality questions that can be asked to determine the quality of the various options available. A strong team has the ability to articulate its precise concerns (deciding about what options need to be selected, which information has the greatest value, and how much risk will be taken). While AI can assess, summarise, and recommend solutions; it does not have the ability to determine if any given problem is worth solving. In fact, the highest-performing teams spend the majority of their time creating the first definition of the concern at hand, and then use AI as a means of accelerating their ability to accomplish any given task at hand. The disparity between these two capabilities will become readily apparent in high-velocity/extremely fast-paced teams.

The assumption wasn't wrong about physics--it was wrong about which problem to solve. I see this constantly with our clients now. Swift came to us not asking "how do we get more memory in our servers" but "how do we run AI models that are impossible with current hardware limitations." One client cut their model training time by 60x because we questioned whether the hardware constraint was actually the constraint. Another reduced power consumption by 54% because we asked why they were provisioning for peak load 24/7. AI is incredible at finding better answers. Humans who can find better QUESTIONS are becoming the scarcest resource in any organization.

The better the tools become, the more valuable human judgment becomes as the final filter between possibility and responsibility.
Roomless Leadership Since remote or hybrid work is now the norm, I'm betting that most significant decisions are not made during Teams/Zoom or Google Meet calls. That strategy is no longer effective. We are in dire need of a new ability that we will refer to as "roomless leadership." It has nothing to do with writing effectively on Slack. Instead, it involves organizing one's ideas to convince others without being physically present, providing strong proof, predicting and defeating objections, and more. Since you cannot take shortcuts when writing, roomless leadership is a very powerful skill because it teaches you to think clearly. Everyone can voice their opinions, and the greatest ideas are chosen based on their quality rather than who has been there the longest. It also motivates you to think through issues thoroughly before expressing your thoughts. Finally, it reduces meeting fatigue.
