I am passionate about wine because it offers a rich history, cultural significance, and complex sensory experience. I enjoy exploring the stories behind Old- and New-World wines and Port, understanding their production processes, and sharing my discoveries with others. I am fueled by the connections and social experiences that wine exploration brings, especially the opportunities to visit wine regions around the world and meet with a diverse community of enthusiasts and experts.
As a travel blogger, I am often asked why I am so passionate about wine and spirits. For me, it goes far beyond just enjoying a glass of wine or a well-made cocktail. Wine and spirits are the gateway to experiencing different cultures, traditions, and flavors from around the world. As someone who has been traveling to Europe for over 35 years, I have had the opportunity to visit countless wineries and distilleries in various countries. Each time, I am amazed by the dedication and craftsmanship that goes into creating these unique beverages. But what truly captures my heart is the stories behind them. I believe that wine and spirits are not simply drinks, but they are a reflection of the people, history, and landscapes of the regions they come from. They provide a window into the soul of a place and its people, allowing us to connect with them on a deeper level.
My favorite thing about wine and spirits are the sense of community they instill, the ability they have to bring people together. Whether it's single village mezcals or hyper local caribbean rums, every spirit tells a story. Every spirit is a product of an entire community, the ingredients they have to work with, the innovations they have engineered out of necessity. At their best, bars and restaurants are communal spaces, spaces to share stories and connect with friends and strangers alike.
I first became enamored with wine when I became aware of its place in history. I realized anything which lasted well over 5,000 years should be considered more closely. The history is fascinating and the one thing I discovered is, other than water most of the time, wine was safe to drink. As I got older and started learning about grapes, the effect of regions and the effect of the individual winemaker (the French call this terroir) I began a never ending journey to learn as much as I can through tasting and researching. This odyssey has taught me about countries, cultures and people. Lastly, wine brings people together, often over food. Food and wine are virtually synonymous. More business dealings, political negotiations and simple commerce have been discussed and planned over wine. Birthdays, anniversaries, religious rites and more have all been conducted over wine. No one has ever said, “pour me a glass of wine, I’m going out to dig a ditch!” Wine is always associated with celebration. Gallileo stated, “Wine is sunlight held together by water,” which perfectly encapsulates the experience of partaking in wine.
I fell in love with wine while working in a French restaurant, where I had the chance to taste amazing Bordeaux wines and see how they worked with and complemented food. I was always curious and wanted to learn. And I loved the idea of how something that came from the land each year could be put together to make something people cherished and enjoyed with friends and family. So, I came to the United States to study viticulture and enology and began my journey with wine. For me, I believe a blended wine is a more complete wine. Each vintage is a blank canvas. Then it’s a puzzle that we put together, arranging each piece to create a wine in harmony. It is the pursuit of crafting a wine that makes you want to come back to the glass for more that drives my passion every day.
My passion for wine and spirits stems from a deep appreciation for the artistry and craftsmanship behind each bottle. The process of creating fine spirits is a blend of science and creativity, where every step—from the selection of ingredients to the distillation process—requires precision and innovation. I’m fascinated by how different ingredients and techniques can create unique flavors and profiles, reflecting the rich heritage and traditions of various cultures. This passion extends beyond the product itself; it’s about the experiences and connections that fine spirits can foster. Sharing a well-crafted spirit with friends or family can turn an ordinary moment into a memorable occasion. The complexity of flavors in wine and spirits also mirrors the diversity of human experiences, making each bottle a journey of discovery. Owning a spirits company also allows me to be involved in the entire process, from concept to creation, and to contribute to the industry’s evolution. I am driven by the opportunity to bring exceptional products to market, to innovate, and to share my love for this craft with others, enhancing their enjoyment and appreciation of fine beverages.
I'm passionate about wine & spirits because I've had the opportunity to work with and scale some incredible brands in this space, like Oak & Eden Whiskey. Helping them achieve over 500% revenue growth in under 2 years fueled my passion for the category. Beyond the brands, I'm fascinated by the complexities of the industry itself. There are so many factors at play, from sourcing the finest ingredients to navigating strict regulations to building an authentic brand story. When all these elements come together, the result can be truly magical. One of my favorite case studies is a small craft distillery I advised. By optimizing their digital marketing and social media strategy, we were able to increase their monthly website traffic by over 700% and drive enough new customers to fund the purchase of addirional distilling equipment. Seeing the impact and knowing I contributed to their growth and success is extremely rewarding. The wine & spirits industry is thriving, especially in the craft and premium segments. There are so many opportunities for innovative brands and products. I'm excited to continue playing a role in helping brands scale and reach their full potential.
The world of wine and spirits is fascinating because it blends history, culture, and craftsmanship. Each bottle tells a story, from the region it comes from to the methods used to create it. The sensory experience of tasting—exploring flavors, aromas, and textures—is endlessly intriguing. It’s also about connection, whether enjoying a glass with friends or discovering something new at a tasting. The passion comes from the artistry involved and the way wine and spirits bring people together.
My commitment to reducing waste and lessening our impact on the environment in business, coupled with my devotion to wine and spirits, starts with this simple appreciation. That is, these beverages are liquid time capsules. Wine captures a very specific moment in time, place, and environment. Recycling captures and reuses material from one point in time to benefit the future. The fact that wine can stay and evolve for several, at times tens of years, imitates the sustainable benefit, the long-term value, in which actions from the present time can literally change what is to come. Just as great wines express the qualities of their terroir, my work in recycling reflects that future generations will have the ability to enjoy and appreciate the splendor and resources of the environment.
While I don't personally consume wine or spirits, I'm passionate about the industry because of its rich cultural significance and the artistry involved in crafting these products. The process of creating wine and spirits is an intricate blend of tradition, science, and creativity, which I find fascinating. Additionally, the industry plays a key role in hospitality and social experiences, bringing people together and enhancing culinary enjoyment, which aligns with my appreciation for craftsmanship and cultural connection.
I’m drawn to wine and spirits due to the artistry and craftsmanship involved in their creation. The meticulous process of selecting ingredients, aging, and blending requires a high level of skill and dedication. Learning about these processes and tasting the results of such fine craftsmanship is truly inspiring.
